Micro or macro: which one does your brand need?

Follower tiers explained without the jargon, and an honest look at when a smaller creator outperforms a bigger one.

The tiers are just shorthand for audience size, and the boundaries move depending on who you ask. Roughly: nano up to ten thousand, micro up to a hundred thousand, macro up to a million, and above that people usually say celebrity.

The number itself tells you almost nothing. What matters is who those people are and whether they act.

When smaller wins

  • Your product is specific. A niche audience that already cares beats a broad one that does not.
  • You need comments and questions, not just views. Smaller audiences talk back more.
  • Your budget buys repetition. Three posts with one micro creator often does more than one post with a macro.

When bigger wins

  • You are launching and need reach in a short window.
  • The product is broad enough that almost anyone is a potential buyer.
  • You want the association itself — the creator's name next to yours is part of what you are buying.

What to ask instead

Stop asking how many followers. Ask who follows them, how many of those people are in your market, and what happens in the comments. A creator whose audience argues, asks and shares is worth more than one whose audience scrolls.
